Introducing 18 Keys

What is 18 Keys?

18 Keys is a project aiming to provide a safe space for women experiencing homelessness in London. Our goal is to raise £1.8 million to fund the design and construction costs for the re-modelling of an existing hostel in Wandsworth.

The building will help 18 women to find comfort and safety, with each person having a studio apartment to call their own. They will also have access to professional counselling in a therapy suite, a beautiful shared garden, a communal area, expert support and free wifi.

Why is it needed?

Women facing homelessness urgently need more support.  There simply are not enough female-only spaces in London to meet demand. Women also have complex needs and do not qualify for low support facilities, or they stay away as they are fearful.

There is a hidden crisis too. Official statistics show that 16% of rough sleepers are women, but local organisations have the figure as high as 35%. We know that the average life expectancy of a woman sleeping rough is 43 – a shocking statistic.

The 18 Keys project will provide specialist accommodation for women who need a safe, secure and peaceful place to become independent again.

Who is behind 18 Keys?

The campaign to raise £1.8m to fund 18 Keys is overseen by the St Martin-in-the-Fields Trust, The Connection’s charity partners. The Connection is a well-established charity that works with people who are rough sleeping in London.

The 18 Keys project will come to life in a redeveloped property owned and managed by The Connection at St Martin’s.

What’s happening at the moment?

The project is currently going through the planning application process with Wandsworth Council. We’re hoping planning approval will be granted later this year.

Soon after we will launch a big public appeal campaign to fundraise a portion of the £1.8m.
